Art Production
Students will create artwork to encourage individual expression and creative problem solving, as well as to introduce
tools, skills, and techniques that they will use throughout their lives. Students will also learn to develop personal
ideas that will make their own work unique.
Art History
Students will understand the rich heritage of the past by understanding various artistic styles, themes, artists, and
time periods. They will also account for the “who, what, when, and why” of an art piece. They will learn to
recognize the cultural differences in art, symbolism, and the outside influences on art such as literature,
patronage, religion, government, and technology.
Art Criticism/Analysis
Students will learn to talk about their own artwork and that of others. They will learn to compare and contrast
images. This is based on a description of:
What is seen-content or subject matter, elements, and principles of design used by the artist, the medium,
and the artists style.
Analysis- why something is unique, what its special qualities are
Interpretation-what was the message, the artists intent
Judgment- based on the point of view of the critic-the value and significance of the work (not simply “I
like it”)
Aesthetic Awareness
Students will learn “the art of the beautiful” by engaging in discussions and activities regarding the Philosophy
of Art. They will address questions such as “What is Art?” “Does art have to be beautiful?” and “Can art be
functional?”This will lead to greater awareness that the idea rather than the beauty of an artwork may be important.
Personal Expression
Through Art education, students will become more aware of how to depict themselves and their surroundings in more
realistic ways, until they are ultimately able to develop a personal style of expression that might be realistic or
totally unrealistic.
